| Zhejiang University is located
in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, a beautiful and prosperous province
in southeastern China with rich cultural heritage as well
as fine traditional products such as silk and tea. Honoured
as "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world"
by the Italian traveler MarcoPolo, Hangzhou was the capital
of China in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). As a tourist
resort with world fame, it now boasts many scenic spots and
historic sites such as West Lake, Soul-Conceal Buddhist Temple,
Six-Harmony Pagoda and the primitive Liangzhu Relics as well
as four national museums of silk, tea, traditional Chinese
medicine and pottery respectively. Hangzhou enjoys a mild
climate throughout the year with four distinct seasons of
special beauty. Hangzhou is only two hours from Shanghai by
train or by bus. Many cities like Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin,
Kunming and Hongkong are all within easy reach by train or
airplane.
With five campuses, namely Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Hubin
and Zhijiang, the university now occupies a total area of
871 hectares and a floor space of 1, 600,000 square meters.
At present, the total number of full-time students has reached
over 41,700, including 30,000 undergraduates, 8,000 postgraduates
working for master's degrees and 3,200 Ph.D. candidates and
500 foreign students. There are also nearly 28,000 students
taking courses in degree and non-degree programs of adult
education. Among its over 9,000 staff members and workers,
there are 8 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6
members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 900 full
professors and 2,400 associate professors. With a total space
of 58, 000 square meters, the university library has a collection
of more than 5,620,000 volumes. In addition, the university
has 6 hospitals affiliated to it, providing medical services
for people from all over Zhejiang Province.

biochemicals, intermediates and other special chemicals including
